AGNES MARIE BENZEK

Johnston City-Agnes Marie Benzek, passed away on July 21st, 2025.

Agnes had many friends through the years and enjoyed people stopping by for a quick chat or visit.

Agnes was born and raised in Johnston City to Tom and Angelina Benzek.

Brothers Stanley and Louis, and sisters Barbara and Helen preceded her in death.

Agnes was a 1949 Johnston City High school graduate. She and her twin sister Helen left for Chicago in the fall of 1949 to start their adult lives.

After spending 15 years living in Chicago, Agnes returned to Southern Illinois to start a career with Sears Roebuck in 1964.

She spent 28 years with Sears with stops in West Frankfort, Carbondale, then Marion, retiring in 1992. She was in parts and service.

Agnes was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Catholic Church in Johnston City save her Chicago years.

She volunteered for every spaghetti dinner and rummage sale that St. Paul's had.

She was a member of the Altar Guild Society and member of the Croatian Fraternal Union.

Agnes traveled to Croatia and Italy in September of 2004; she got to meet 2nd and 3rd cousins and see the tombs of her grandparents. Nephews Steve Benzek and Michael Klempin served as her guides.

Agnes had two nieces Janet McGann of Florida and Diane Benzek of Alabama, four nephews; Steve Benzek of Washington D.C., Tom Klempin of Ohio, Matt Benzek of Alabama and Michael Klempin of West Frankfort and Alabama. She also had two great nieces and five great nephews.

Agnes's memorial mass will be Tuesday, October 14th at 9:00 A.M. at St. Paul's Catholic Church with Fr. Francis officiating. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 8:30 A.M. to 8:00 A.M. at the church.
