DELMAR "GENE" BURGESS

Johnston City–Delmar "Gene" Burgess 81, of Johnston City passed away on Sunday, December 20, 2009 at 12:10 P.M. at Shawnee Christian Nursing Center in Herrin.

Services will be held at Murman & Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City on Thursday December 24, 2009 at 1:00 P.M. with Pastor Gordon Lantrip officiating. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery in Johnston City with military rites conducted by the Marion V.F.W. and American Legion and Illinois Army National Guard. Visitation will be from 11:00 A.M. till 1:00 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Gene was born on November 27, 1928, in Pittsburg, the son of James Delmar and Delphia (Edwards) Burgess. He married Leah (Adams) on April 28, 1950 in Marion. She survives.

He was a retired coal miner working for 43 years and was a member of the U.M.W.A.. He was veteran of WWII proudly serving in the Army. He was of the Baptist Faith.

He is survived by two sons, Steven Burgess of Johnston City, and Barry Burgess and wife Linda of West Frankfort; five grandchildren, Kelly Caudill and husband John, Amy Burgess, Wesley Burgess, Bethany Burgess, and Joseph Burgess; three great grandchildren, Lillian Judd, Karson Caudill, and Shane Caudill; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Louise Williams; and three brothers, Claude Edwards, Earl Burgess and Dennis Burgess.
