DOROTHY HOEBBEL

Dorothy Louise Hoebbel, also known lovingly as Dottie, age 88, of Marion, IL, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 24, 2020 at Shawnee Christian Nursing Center. Dottie was an adored wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.

Dorothy was born on March 19, 1932 in San Antonio, Texas to Rozyl and Mamie Sine.  Dorothy enjoyed a wonderful childhood surrounded by her loving siblings: Ethel Armend, affectionately known as Tootsie, Carl (Josie) Sine, Evelyn (Jim) Smith and Arlene (Harold) Baker. Dorothy also had three brothers who passed away as toddlers: Barney, Juel, and Arville.

Dorothy was born during the Great Depression. Her father, Rozyl, was a carpenter and moved the family around to find work. Johnston City, IL was always their home base, so it's fitting that Dorothy met the love of her life, Harry Hoebbel, at the Johnston City swimming pool in 1950. Dorothy and Harry had dreams of living in the "big city" and moved to Chicago in 1951. It was there that Dorothy's greatest life achievement was realized, her four children, Richard Hoebbel, Donald (Betty) Hoebbel, Gary (Susan) Hoebbel and her little girl, Janice Larsen.

Dorothy loved nothing more than to be surrounded by her family. Get Dottie and her sisters together and the cackling could be heard from blocks away. When her and Harry purchased their retirement homes in Southern Illinois, first on the Lake of Egypt and next in Marion, they made sure they were suitable to accommodate many visitors. Dorothy had a famous guest book that visitors looked forward to signing; nothing made her happier than a full-house…in more ways than one! When Dorothy wasn't hosting guests, she could be found at her favorite hangout, the Riverboat Casino. Dorothy loved the penny slots, but loved playing card games with her family and friends even more. Some of her favorites included Thirty-One, SkipBo, and Poker. As young adults, her children recall her and Harry coming home later than usual because they'd be out playing card games with family until the wee-hours of the morning.

Dottie had self-diagnosed "go-itis". She loved to be on-the-go and especially enjoyed shopping for deals at Dillard's and TJ Maxx. Her grandchildren were the proud recipients of her shopping escapades, frequently sporting their cat themed PJs. Dorothy was an avid cat lover. If a cat was lonely or hungry, they would find her, and she would love them.

Dorothy always had a camera in her hand, taking pictures to remember every moment. Looking through her photo albums is the best walk down memory lane. She bought a fancy new 35mm camera in the 80's and was seen still using it up until several years ago. Her favorite subject to photograph was her grandkids, she also loved spoil them with her favorite treats including: tootsie pops, sugar daddies, cream horns, sherbet ice cream and Oreo cookies in the rooster cookie jar.

Dorothy was provided wonderful care and shown great kindness and love by the staff at Shawnee Christian Nursing Center for the last 4 years. Thank you to all the wonderful healthcare professionals who took good care of our mother and grandmother.

Dorothy is a loving grandmother to eight grandchildren: Keri (Keenan) Hoebbel Pryor, Richard (Lauren) Hoebbel, Jr., Jill Hoebbel, Nicholas (Lauren) Larsen, Kristen (Aaron) Roberts, Melissa (Tim) Muldowney, Eric (Christina) Larsen, and Megan Hoebbel. Dorothy is also a proud great-grandmother to eighteen great-grandchildren: Leah Bielski, Caleb Bielski, Halie Bielski, Valaree Redmond, Maya Rivers, Jarrett Rivers, Jr., Sophia Cadney, Ava Larsen, Jordon Borst, Maddie Borst, Jayden Rodriguez, Vincent Pryor, Juliet Pryor, Lincoln Roberts, Phillip Hoebbel, Amelia Hoebbel, Riggins Roberts, and Eleanor Muldowney.

She is survived by her sisters, Evelyn Smith and Arlene Baker. She is predeceased by her husband, Harry, her siblings, Carl Sine, Ethel Armend, Barney Sine, Juel Sine, Arville Sine and her parents, Rozyl and Mamie.

A graveside service will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Wednesday April 29, 2020 in the Lakeview Cemetery of Johnston City. The Murman & Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City is in charge of arrangements.
