DOROTHY MARIE (HUGGINS) HUGHES
Johnston City-Dorothy Marie (Huggins) Hughes, 91 of Johnston City passed away at 9:46 P.M. Monday December 24, 2012 at her family home.
A Celebration of her life will be held at 12:00 noon Saturday December 29, 2012 at the St. Paul's Catholic Church in Johnston City with Sr. Catherine Wellinghoff officiating. During the service there will be an opportunity for anyone to share their personal remembrance of Dorothy. Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. to 12: noon Saturday at the church. Murman & Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City is in charge of arrangements. The Celebration of her life will be followed by a meal at the St. Paul's Parish Center.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Cystic Fibrosis or to The American Cancer Society. Envelopes will be available at the church.

Dorothy was born on February 21, 1921 the daughter of and Edith Abel and McKinley Huggins. She married John A. Hughes.

Dorothy was a member of the St. Paul's Catholic Church. Her hobbies were visiting with her children, reading, painting, and exercising at the aquatic center.

Dorothy served as Johnston City Deputy City Clerk and as a member of the Johnston City Planning Commission from it's inception for 7 years. She also served on the Johnston City School Board.

She served on the Williamson County Mental Health Association and was employed by the Jackson-Williamson Community Action Agency. She assisted in organizing the Williamson County "HELP" Program. She was a member of the Occupational Advisory Committee for SIU, Carbondale Manpower Skill Center, and was on the John A. Logan Foundation Board.

Dorothy served on and was recipient of an award from the Illinois Welfare Association and later was honored at the 1980 Illinois Welfare Association Annual Conference in Chicago and presented an award by Mayor Richard Daley for her volunteerism in public service.

She hosted a reception for Governor Dan Walker and was appointed by the Governor to the Illinois Human Relations Commission and was Assistant Director of Southern Illinois Governors Office. Dorothy and her husband John also hosted a reception at their home for Senator Paul Simon.

She was the first person to conduct an education and fund raising drive in Southern Illinois for Cystic Fibrosis for 8 years following her son Mickey's death from the disease.

She is survived by 4 children, Kathleen Brighton of Swansea, Ellen Ignatius and husband David R. of Rancho Mirage, CA, Terrence "Terry" Hughes and wife Jean of Center, MO, and Kevin Patrick Hughes and partner Ric Roldan of Los Angeles, CA; grandchildren, John Darin Moore, Sarah, James, Mark, and Jon Hughes, David and John Brighton, great grandchildren, Lyndsay Nichole and John Parker Moore, Wren Paul and Race Brighton; and a brother, Philip R. Huggins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two children, Marie Adele Prater and John McKinley "Mickey" Hughes; and two sisters, Evelyn Garvey and Pauline Huggins.
