EDNA RUTH CARTER
Johnston City–Edna Ruth Carter 84, of Johnston City passed away on Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at 3:45 A.M. in her family home.
Services will be held at 3:00 P.M., Saturday January 27, 2018, in the Murman & Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City with Pastor Larry Stevens officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Johnston City. Visitation will be from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. Saturday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Edna was born on October 10, 1933, in Marion, the daughter of Carl and Ethel (Davis) Kelton among seven siblings. She married Richard Carter on June 25, 1961 in Marion. He survives.
Edna graduated in 1951 from the Marion High School. She then attended St. John's School of Nursing in Springfield and received her R.N. license in 1954. She began work as an E.R. Nurse at the newly opened Marion Memorial Hospital. In 1958 Dr. J. Johnson M.D. of Marion became the company Dr. for Olin Matheson Dynamite Plant and she went with him to establish the company clinic at the plant. She stayed to run the clinic and is where she met and married Richard Carter of Johnston City. After marriage and Richard's graduation from SIU, they began a series of transfers and new jobs at various hospitals in St. Louis, Dallas-Ft Worth and Hurst, Texas.
Edna was a member and attended the First Baptist Church of Johnston City. She was a member of the Eagles and American Legion Auxiliary, and a life time member of the V.F.W. Lady Auxiliary.
Edna was blessed with three children who survive; Gayla Martini of Marion, Tom and wife Tina of Nashville and Tim of Johnston City; five grandchildren, Zack and Cassie Carter, Max, Ryan and Gus Martini; five great grandchildren Nick, Caprice, MacKaylei, Marley and Lyric Carter; one sister, Dolly Hudgens and husband Carl of Marion; one brother, Roy Kelton of Sneeds, FL; and several nieces and nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; father and mother-in-law, Jesse and Leota Carter, five siblings, Sam, Bobby Joe, Betty Yost, John (Corkey) and Jim Kelton.
