GARY ROACH
Johnston City–Gary Roach 73 of Johnston City passed away at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday December 20, 2011 in Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO surrounded by his family.
Services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Friday December 23, 2011 at the Murman & Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City with Rick Ditch and Rev. Ron Ferguson officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery in Johnston City with graveside military rites conducted by the Marion V.F.W. American Legion and Illinois Army National Guard.
Memorials may be made to the Stiritz United Methodist Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Gary was born in Johnston City on August 23, 1938 to Rose (Swift) and L.A. Roach. On June 13, 1959 he was married to Viola Walker. Together they shared 52 1/2 years of marriage.
He is survived by his wife Viola; two sons and daughter-in-laws, Brian and Laura Roach, and Daren and Georgia Roach; four grandchildren, Danielle, Dylan, Kayla, and Erin, all of Johnston City; one brother and sister-in-law, Rick and Darlene Roach of Goreville; brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws, Mary and Kenneth McGee of Carbondale, Margaret Morgan of Marion, and Liz Walker of Grand Blanc, Michigan; cousins, nieces, nephews, and many friends..
He is preceded in death by his parents; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Harvey and Ruth Walker; sister and brother-in-law, Theda and Ken Clarida; and brother-in-law, Dr. James D. Walker.
Gary was a loving husband, father, brother, and grandfather.
He proudly served in the U.S. Army stationed at Fort Ord, California.
Gary graduated from Johnston City High School in 1956 where he was captain of the football team.
He retired from Todd Uniforms in Marion. He also worked for E.T. Simonds Construction Co., Gateway Cigar Co., and Western and Southern Insurance Co.
He attended and was a member of the Stiritz United Methodist Church. He was a charter member of the Crab Orchard Bass Club and was an avid fisherman.
He liked to plant vegetables in his garden which he shared with friends and family.
His biggest love was his family, especially his sons and grandchildren, which he followed and enjoyed attending each sport and activity they were in.
