George Laverne Jones, 78, of Pittsburg, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, August 16, 2026 at the Veterans Community Living Center in Marion.

George was born in Marion to Lora Laverne and Dorothy E. (Smith) Jones. He was united in marriage to Jane Murphy on November 1, 2004. They shared 22 years of marriage together.

He is preceded in death by his parents; three siblings, Jack Jones, Shirley Hill and Eva Vojvodich, daughter and son-in-law Mickie and Mark Brady.

George is survived by his daughter Sherri Jearlds and husband Tim of Marion, and son; Shannon Jones and his wife Amy of St. Louis; grandchildren, Andrea Roland and husband Clayton, Brittany Howell and husband Robbie, Emma Jones, Lucas Jones, and Kaylee Brady; great-grand children, Marlie Roland, Malakai Roland, Bella Essary, and Sophia Howell; siblings, Josephine Varner of Tyler, TX, Karen Bush of Marion, Sandra Long and husband Larry of Johnston City, Judy Hill and husband Gene of Herrin and Lela Jones of Johnston City; He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

George is a United States Army veteran. He served honorably during the Vietnam War. His service reflected his strong commitment to protect the freedoms we hold dear. He carried the values of honor and sacrifice throughout his life.

He was a welder by trade as his father was. He also was co-owner of SoJo Auto Body Shop and Towing in Crab Orchard for several years.

In his early years, he enjoyed spending time on his CB radios talking with his community of radio buddies. George enjoyed fishing, boating, and gardening. He enjoyed metalworking and tinkering in the garage.

Services will be held on Friday August 21, 2026 at 1:00 P.M. in the Murman & Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City. with Tim Jeralds officiating with military honors conducted by the Marion VFW, American Legion, and Funeral Honor Detail. Visitation will be held from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Friends and family are invited to gather in remembrance of George and for his service well-given.
