George “Punchy” Helfrich

George “Punchy” Helfrich, 92, passed away peacefully on September 2, 2026, at the Illinois Veterans Home in Anna, Illinois.

George was born on November 5, 1933, in Johnston City, Illinois, to Joe and Mary (Nargle) Helfrich. He lived a long and honorable life marked by devotion to his family, service to his country, and a quiet strength that earned the respect of all who knew him.

George proudly served in the United States Navy during the Korean War aboard the USS Platte (AO-24). Throughout his life, he carried the values of duty, loyalty, and patriotism learned during his military service.

In October 1960, George married the love of his life, Carol (Kaufman) Helfrich. Together they built a loving family and shared many years of happiness and devotion. Carol preceded him in death.

George was of the Catholic faith and found strength and comfort in his faith throughout his life.

George is survived by his daughter, Tish Hall (Mike Lang); his sons, Doug (Barb) Helfrich, Kevin (Angie) Helfrich, and Bryon (Dianna) Helfrich; his grandchildren, Meghan (Jeremy) Blechle, Morgan (Tim) Rich, Austin (Courtney) Helfrich, Wyatt Gabby (Emma McLaskey), Caleb Helfrich, and Kelsey Helfrich; his great-grandchildren, Aidan and Alex Blechle, Kohen and Kasen Layne, Christian Rich, and Aria Caraker; his sister, Jeanne Hatfield; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carol Helfrich; his son-in-law, Phillip Hall; his grandson, Shaun Hall; his brothers, Carl and Jack Helfrich; his sister-in-law, Joy Helfrich; his brother-in-law, Jack Hatfield; and his sister and brother-in-law, Glenda and Mike Fabits.

George will be remembered for his unwavering love for family, his honorable military service, and the kindness and generosity he showed throughout his life. He was a man of integrity whose presence brought comfort and strength to those around him. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, some of whom are still waiting for their promised trip to Disneyland, a memory that will continue to bring smiles for years to come.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 8, from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Murman & Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 9, at 11:00 A.M. at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Johnston City, with Father Francis Tambala officiating.

Burial will follow at Lakeview Cemetery.

The family extends a special thank you to the staff of the Illinois Veterans Home in Anna and Hospice of Southern Illinois for their compassionate care, kindness, and support during this difficult time.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Illinois Veterans Home in Anna, Illinois, in honor of George’s life and service.

Though he is gone from our sight, George’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. A life devoted to family, faith, service, and love is truly a life well lived.
