"BETTE" HELEN CARTER

Johnston City-"Bette" Helen Carter, 82 of Johnston City passed away at 3:40 A.M. Thursday April 25, 2013 at the Shawnee Christian Nursing Center in Herrin.

Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday April 29, 2013 at the First Christian Church in Johnston City with Pastor Lee Petty officiating. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery of Johnston City. Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Sunday at the Murman& Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City.

Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church. Envelopes will be available at the church or at the funeral home.

Bette was born on February 20, 1931 in Johnston City the daughter of John Charles and Juanita Rose (Higginson) Shukites. She married Willie E. Carter on February 20, 1949 in Johnston City. He preceded her in death on July 25, 2005.

Bette had worked for Sears for 26 years as an Executive Secretary retiring in 1987. She was a teacher at the Presbyterian Church in East Chicago, IN; and she was a member of the First Christian Church of Johnston City.

She is survived by a daughter, Donna D. Walsh and husband Bruce of Abilene, TX; a son, Willie Keith Carter of Portage, IN; 3 granddaughters, Holly Elizabeth Carter of Ft. Worth, TX, Tanya Hilier and husband Shane of Hebron, IN, and Michelle Cwetna of Crown Point, IN; 6 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Charleen Moore and husband Marion of West Frankfort and Marilyn Clements and husband Ralph of Arnold, MO; 1 brother, John Shukites and wife Judi of Christopher; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband.
