JAMES CHARLES BENNETT

Johnston City–James Charles Bennett 93 passed away at 4:15 A.M. Sunday December 4, 2016 at his residence with family and care givers by his side.

James Charles was born on July 17, 1923 in Herrin to Walter James and Mary Elizabeth (Milam) Bennett.

He proudly served in the Marines during World War II. Charles was discharged 11/27/1945 as a corporal clerk typist.

He married Thelma Bennett on January 4, 1947 in Hobart, Indiana. On January 4, 2017 he and Thelma would have celebrated 70 years of marriage.

Charles worked as a farmer, coal miner, and as a car transport driver for 49 years. He was especially proud of his longevity as an accident free truck driver.

Charles was a life member of Marion VFW.

Charles is survived by his wife Thelma; children, Terry and wife Sandy Bennett, Cathy and husband Bob Savant, Melody and husband Paul York, Toby and wife Gay Bennett, Tammy and husband Harry Mostafa, and Penny Richison. Also surviving are five grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and several nieces and nephews. His sister Shirley Fleming survives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Jarred Bennett; brother, Walter Bennett; sister, Peggy Hoxie.

Services will be held at 1:00 P.M., Thursday December 8, 2016, at the Murman & Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City with Pastor Keith Fletcher officiating. Burial will be in the Herrin City Cemetery in Herrin. Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois and will be accepted at the funeral home.
