KATHRYN FERN SMITH
Johnston City-Kathryn Fern Smith 85, of Johnston City passed away at 9:00 A.M. on Monday March 21, 2011 at Frankfort Care Center in West Frankfort.
Services will be held on Monday March 28, 2011 at 1:00 P.M. at the First United Methodist Church in Johnston City with Rev. Ted Hartley officiating. Private burial will be at the DeSoto Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. Monday at the church. Murman and Wilson Funeral Home of Johnston City is in charge of arrangements.
Kathryn was born on October 13, 1925 in DeSoto the daughter of Clarence Elmer and Ella Viola Elizabeth (Brown) Batteau. She was the 11th of 12 children. She married Robert Harold Smith on October 4, 1945 in Murphysboro. He preceded her in death on March 8, 1980.
Kathryn attended First United Methodist Church in Johnston City for 50 years and was active with their Food Pantry and was treasurer of the Homemakers class for several years. She worked at the National Transformer Plant in Johnston City until it closed and then Johnston City Farm Fresh until she retired. Her greatest joy came from being in the kitchen, she loved cooking and baking for the church dinners and for her family.
She is survived by one son, James Smith of Lanark, a sister, Maneeta Smith of DeSoto, brother Jack Batteau and wife Judy of Elkville, grandchildren James Michael Smith, Carla Louise DiGiulio of Carol Stream, Robert James Smith of Downers Grove, Todd Taylor and wife Kim of Thompsonville, Angela Smith and husband Richard of Johnston City, Therresa Hurd of Pleasanton, TX and Christina Herrin of Marana, AZ,and several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, James Alfred, Clifford Eugene, Ray Clarence and Ted Westbrook Batteau; sisters, Madge Bernice Stamms, Athlee Clare McCard, Johanna Bishop, Sarah Margaret Homs and Ruby Ann Belle Bright; daughters, Linda June Taylor and Elizabeth Marie Burchell.
