LEON JERALD "JERRY" EBERHARDT
Johnston City–Leon Jerald "Jerry" Eberhardt 89 passed away on Sunday, July 16, 2023 at 11:39 A.M. Herrin Hospital.
Jerry was born to Charlie and Myrtie (Dorris) Eberhardt on January 7, 1935. He liked to say one day before Elvis Presley.
Jerry was a life-long Johnston City resident. He married Charlene Sue Ray on February 7, 1969, and they had one son Jerry Ray.
Jerry graduated from Johnston City High School and captained the basketball, football, baseball, and track teams. Basketball was his favorite sport and he continued to "shoot hoops" throughout his life. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Johnston City where his athletic skills drew youth to practice their faith.
He was honorably discharged from the Army, having served in Korea. He retired from Old Ben Coal Mine.
He is survived by his granddaughter, Payton Rae Eberhardt; and many nieces and a nephew.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son; and brothers, John Edgar (Rachel Panty), Glen Eugene (Juanita Claunch), Earl Ray; sisters, Delba Marjorie Hunter (Wallace), and Dorothy Sharknas (Joe).
Jerry was a man of integrity who lived his values. His love for sports, Christ, and family are his legacies.
Murman & Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City are in charge of arrangements.
