Obituary

Ronald E. Reed, Sr. HERRIN – Ronald E. Reed, Sr., 84 of Herrin, formerly Johnston City, died at 11:57 A.M. Tuesday, May 20, 2025 at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

A Celebration of life will be held at Murman and Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City on Friday June 27, 2025 at 3:00 P.M. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 3:00 P.M. Military honors will be held at Lakeview Cemetery immediately following.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois and envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

He was born February 4, 1941, in Chicago, to Edmund and Ann (Vidas) Reed. He married Shirley Dillon October 6, 2001 at her parents' family farm in Alto Pass, IL, and she survives.

He was a veteran of the United States Air Force. Following his service, he worked in construction and later retired from the Williamson County Sheriffs Department as a correctional officer. He was a long-time member of the Buccaneer's Club in Johnston City, IL where he was known to his friends as "Cowboy." He and his wife attended Alto Pass Baptist church, and he was a man of deep faith in God. He was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs and Bears. He enjoyed grilling for the family and working in his yard. He will be greatly missed by anyone who ever knew him. Even though he was a quiet soul, he made a positive impact on all people.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Dillon-Reed of Herrin; two daughters, Connie Reed of DuQuoin, Bobbi Jo and Jeff Smith of Apollo Beach, FL; a son, Ronald E. Reed, Jr. (Jay) of Johnston City; stepchildren, Kim and Jack Rennolds of Springfield, Stephanie Dillon of Springfield, Bryon and Samantha Grammer of Atoka IN, and Jessica and Tony Kessler of Carbondale; grandchildren, Jacob Reed, Destani Frye, Brittani Frye, and Maci Smith; one great granddaughter Milani; Diane Clements of Johnston City, Paul and Vicky Reed of Johnston City, Mary and Wayne Edwards of Merrillan, WI.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father.
