Steven Burgess

Johnston City–Steven Eugene Burgess, 71, of Johnston City, passed away peacefully, at home on Saturday, July 30, 2022.

He was born on January 15, 1951 in Herrin, IL to Delmar Eugene "Gene" and Leah Jean (Adams) Burgess.

He is survived by his daughters Kelly (John) Caudill of Carterville and Amy Burgess of Johnston City. Grandchildren Lillian Judd and Karson Caudill of Carterville and Shane (Alicia) Caudill of Kissimmee, FL, great-granddaughter, Audrey Caudill of Kissimmee, FL, nephews Wesley (Becky) Burgess of St. Louis, MO, Joseph Burgess of Chicago and niece, Bethany (Aaron) Taylor and their children, of Murphysboro. He also considered the half-sister of his daughters, as one of his own, Mallory Daugherty and her boys, Phillip and Johnnie of Carterville, plus many other extended family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Barry Burgess and sister-in-law, Linda Burgess.

After a few early adventures, Steve found his career as a 4th generation coal miner and worked in mines throughout southern & central Illinois, and beyond, before his retirement in 2015.  He was a lifetime member of the Buccaneer's Club in Johnston City and treasured the friendships and fellowship he found there. His greatest joy came from time with his family and telling stories.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, through Murman Wilson Funeral Home. A private graveside service will be held for his family. A celebration of life will be held for all family and friends at the Buccaneer's Picnic Grounds in Johnston City will be held on Sunday August 14, 2022 starting at 12:00 noon.
