WILLIAM "BILL" VERNELL SLATER

Stiritz-William "Bill" Vernell Slater 76 of Stiritz passed away on Thursday December 11, 2014 at 1:46 A.M. at his family home.

Services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday December 13, 2014 at the Murman & Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City with Pastor Don Brown officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. Saturday at the Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery in Johnston City.

William was born on July 8, 1938 in Chicago the son of Harvey Slater and Marie (Henson) Benton. He was to married Gloria Sue (Collins) on September 17, 1956 in Johnston City. She survives.

William retired in 1999 after 43 years working for Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad where he worked as a Freight Conductor. He was a graduate of the J.C.H.S. class of 1956, where he started 4 years in basketball and football. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Johnston City. He enjoyed going to the D.Q. and having a cup of coffee with his cronies.

He is survived by one daughter, Kim Slater and husband Willie Dunham of Johnston City; one grandson, Dak Slater and wife Tonya of Stiritz; three great grandchildren, Mikka, Dackery, and Tori; one sister Rose M. Stallings and husband Homer of Johnston City; a brother-in-law, Earl Dale Williams of Herrin; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Harvey Slater Jr.; one sister, Sandra Sue Williams; and a mother-in-law and father-in-law, Edith and Paul Collins.
